The Sincerity Project #5 (2024)
10 years ago, Team Sunshine Performance dared themselves to do something no theater company has done before: create a show lasting 24 years. A decade into this experiment, The Sincerity Project has taken many forms, yielding and morphing to the changes in the artists’ lives and in the world. Over these 10 years the ensemble members have found life partners, witnessed the death of their parents, become parents, purchased homes, moved cities, and stepped more deeply into their queerness and trans identity.
As the project’s Creative Director, I oversee the 24-year arc of the project and have directed most of the installments over the last 10 years.. But I’ve never really been inside the work or onstage -- until this most recent production. This last installment focused on my preparation to adopt a child. I’m currently in the process of signing up for adoption as a solo queer parent. When the ensemble and I began working on the piece, it became clear that this moment in my life offered a powerful entry point into questions many of us are wrestling with right now:
What is it like to come of age in this moment?
What does parenting look like in our current political moment, especially for queer and trans families?
What are the ways in which we can design our families and communities for support and fortification?
What creativity can queerness invite towards building the important relational structures of our lives?
